ZAMBOANGA CITY, PHILIPPINES (04 May 2020) – The new ZAMCELCO Management has considered the crisis, the agony to every Zamboangueño caused by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), and launched several response programs to help and strengthen its member-consumer-owners (MCOs) in the fight against the pandemic.

In consideration of the COVID-19 Emergency, the management launched its first response program on 18 March 2020 through public advisory, a grant of 30-DAY payment extension to all its MCOs from the due date of their electricity bills for March 2020. Another response program was followed, as per the ERC Advisory dated 15 April 2020, the MCOs will be provided a grace period through the deferment of the electricity bill which falls due within the period of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) or from March 16, 2020 to April 30 2020, without surcharges. The electricity bill shall be amortized in four (4) equal monthly installments, payable in the four (4) succeeding billing months following the end of the ECQ.

To show solidarity in fighting with this crisis, a “Patawid Liwanag” Program was also launched as a social responsibility program subsidizing the electricity needs of the marginalized member-consumer-owners for April 2020. They will be called lifeline consumers with 40 kWh and below consumption. This is a response program led by the Philippine Rural Electric Cooperatives Association, Inc. (PHILRECA) in partnership with all the other electric cooperatives in the country to be one with the government’s efforts to curb the socioeconomic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the marginalized sector in the society.

Moreover, the management took an extra step in helping its MCOs by partnering with San Miguel Consolidated Power Corporation (SMCPC) in “A TWO MILLION Fresh Chicken Project” with ONE THOUSAND bags of Flour for bread making to be distributed to its member-consumer-owners in Zamboanga City through the Local Government Unit (LGU). The management also granted a Free Electricity connection to some Checkpoints in Zamboanga City as they play a vital role during the ECQ.

The new ZAMCELCO would like to assure its member-consumer-owners that the management is doing its best and will continue to assist in any way possible and that ZAMCELCO management is in solidarity with the people of Zamboanga and working closely with the local government unit and the authorities to support measures to combat COVID-19 pandemic.
